About our Playgroup

St. Mary's Playgroup opened in 1985 and is run by a voluntary committee of parents and volunteers.

The playgroup will operate from a Portacabin classroom in the grounds of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Primary school in Churchdown, situated on the outskirts of Gloucester. We have moved into our new home and have new play area funded by Gloucestershire County Council Capital Grant.

St Mary’s Playgroup is a committee run, non-profit making group. The committee are a group of volunteer parents who hold regular, informal meetings to discuss the running of the group and fund raising events. New parents are encouraged to attend and become involved. We are happy for parents to help during sessions if they wish.

Our playgroup offers education and care for children below school age and over the age of 2 years and 6 months. Although we have a close relationship with the St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we are a Catholic Nursery but welcome children from all faiths.

St Mary’s Playgroup is a registered charity and a member of the PATA (Playgroup and Toddler Association). PATA provides practical support and training for staff, committee and parents helping to ensure that all of its member pre-schools achieve the desired high standards. The Playgroup is also registered with Ofsted under the Children’s Act 1989 and inspected three to four yearly as required. We are also registered with the Early Years and Childcare Service.

The Playgroup receives the ‘Free For 3 and 4’ funding for all our 3 and 4 year olds and Achieving Two Year Olds funding for eligible two year olds. We also have a fund-raising team who are responsible for raising money to buy all the essential items that the Playgroup needs to continually grow and develop.
